      What is a hectare?

A hectare (symbol ha) is a metric unit of area equal to 10,000 square meters: a square 100 meters on each side. The name joins the prefix hecto, meaning 100, and the are, an older unit of 100 m². One hectare is one hundred ares.

The hectare is not an SI unit, but NIST Special Publication 811 lists it among the units accepted for use with the International System of Units, for land and agricultural area. Most countries that use the metric system list land in hectares.

      What is an acre?

An acre is a US customary and imperial unit of area equal to 43,560 square feet, or 4,840 square yards, per NIST Handbook 44. It comes from a strip one chain (66 ft) wide and one furlong (660 ft) long. In the United States land is still measured and sold by the acre.

      Hectares in other area units

      • 1 hectare = 10,000 square meters = 107,639 square feet = 11,960 square yards.
      • 100 hectares = 1 square kilometer = 247.1 acres.
      • 259 hectares = 1 square mile = 640 acres.
      • 1 are = 100 m² = 0.01 hectare.
      • 1 square meter = 10,000 square centimeters = 1,000,000 square millimeters = about 1,550 square inches.

The hectare is defined from the meter, and the acre from the international foot, so both conversions are exact. The result is as accurate as the land measure you start from; a centimeter or millimeter never matters at this scale.

Hectares and acres in land listings and farming

Land listings in Europe, Canada, Australia and most of the world give the size in hectares; US listings give acres. Convert before you compare: a price per hectare is 2.471 times the price per acre for the same land, so €24,710 per hectare is about €10,000 per acre.

Seed, fertilizer and spray labels follow the same rule. A rate per hectare divided by 2.471 gives the rate per acre, and a rate per acre multiplied by 2.471 gives the rate per hectare.

      Check the listing's unit

Some listings abroad mix hectares, ares and square meters. Convert every figure to one unit before you compare parcels, and check the size on the official land registry record.

      Frequently asked questions

How many acres is 1 hectare?

1 hectare is 2.471 acres (2.4710538 to seven decimals). A hectare is 10,000 square meters, and an acre is 4,046.86 square meters.

How do I convert acres to hectares?

      Multiply acres by 0.4047, or divide by 2.471. 10 acres × 0.4047 = 4.05 hectares, and 160 acres is 64.75 hectares.

      How big is a hectare?

A hectare is 10,000 square meters: a square 100 meters on each side, about 107,639 square feet. That is about 2.5 times the size of an acre.

Is a hectare bigger than an acre?

Yes. One hectare is about 2.47 acres, so a parcel listed at 40 hectares is close to 99 acres.

How many hectares are in a square kilometer?

      100. A square kilometer is 1,000,000 square meters, or 100 hectares, about 247 acres. A square mile is 259 hectares.

Is the hectare an SI unit?

Not strictly. NIST Special Publication 811 lists the hectare (1 ha = 10⁴ m²) among the non-SI units accepted for use with the SI, used for agrarian area.
